To paraphrase the musician Carlos Santana, painting is like an ocean. There are endless possibilities. I don’t really know why I paint the way I do. I imagine that the need I feel inside, which translates into the work I do, is shaped in response to other paintings I have seen and experienced – what they have given me and what I want to add to the dialogue. While I usually start out with a general idea of what I am after, so often during the act of painting I feel like I am following orders. Sometimes I experience that intense feeling of excitement when the painting looks like what I feel inside. Most of the time I miss the mark and try again.
