Bonnie J. Swenson Folkerts - Painter

Bonnie J. Folkerts
Bonnie's art reflects her love and appreciation of Nature- from big, bold paintings of rabbits, moose and wolves to small sticks and mushrooms tucked under a fallen tree in the forests of northern Minnesota.  Her paintings capture and express the essence of the animals or birds that speak to her.  It is her hope that those who see her work will also  find something in it that makes them happy and peaceful.  A beautiful, wooded piece of property provides daily inspiration from the myriad of birds, bunnies, deer, and other creatures who live there with Bonnie and her family.

The road to being a professional artist was circuitous...  Painting was a part of life from elementary school, yet as college approached a more "practical" course of study was pursued.   A BS in Interior Design from the University of Minnesota still provided time for some art study in addition to the design pursuits.  Many years working in the design  field and raising two wonderful children left little time for art - yet there were opportunities to sell art and create commissioned pieces for interior designers.  Once her children were grown and married, the time seemed right to make art a bigger, more important part of life.  That meant a professional studio (Suite #109) in the Casket Arts Building and developing a broader client base with many of the best interior designers in the area, and with the community at large.

Bonnie was born and raised in LaCrosse, WI of parents who grew up in rural south central Minnesota.  Grandparents and great-grandparents settled there after leaving Sweden in the late 1800's.  A visit to Sweden last summer was an amazing journey to a place where she felt instantly at home.  This trip will inform a future body of work, which we can look forward to seeing this fall.   Connections were made with shirttail relatives who were warm and welcoming, and will be reason enough to return.

When not in her studio, Bonnie finds rest and rejuvenation on the North Shore of Lake Superior.  The quiet beauty of the landscape and opportunity to hike the ancient forests or gaze onto the vastness of The Lake are invaluable in centering the soul and inspiring new work.

Bonnie's studio is open for First Thursday's throughout the year, as well as for other special events, and by appointment. You may contact her at Bonnie@BJFolkerts.com, check out her website - bjfolkerts.com or by phone at 612-387-8799.
